The Spelling Bee Competition is an initiative of Senator Chief (Mrs) Oluremi Tinubi the former First Lady of Lagos State, which was introduced to Lagos Ministry of Education through the New Era Foundation (NEF).The aim of the competition was to improve the Vocabulary and the self confidence of pupils/student across of Lagos State. The competition is an annual competition for public primary and secondary schools in Lagos -Nigeria.
The Competition started in 2001 and it was categorized into two distinctive levels; the Primary and Secondary level to allow equal peering in the students intellectual Quotient (IQ) and intellectual abilities. Age limitations for the two categories are 6years -12years, and 12years -17years for primary and secondary schools respectively
The 2015 Spelling Bee Competition began differently with the preliminaries held at each of the 57 Local Government Area (LGA) and Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of the State with Horlicks Food Drinks from GlaxoSmithKline(GSK) and ETISALAT CLIQ LITE in attendance to brand the hall and splash gift items on participants and winners who then represent the various LGA and LCDA at the Grand Finale .
